Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Q&A

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is often referred to as eyelid surgery. This surgical procedure can be performed on the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both eyelids. This is a cosmetic surgery that is often used to correct drooping eyelids and bags under the eyes. When eyelids droop severely, they can obstruct vision. Many patients who complain of always looking tired find that blepharoplasty can be a good solution for this issue.

How Does Blepharoplasty Work?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure, and can only be performed by a qualified surgeon. The patient will be under anesthesia, which will be either IV or local sedation. This means that a person will usually doze lightly through the procedure and will not be in pain. During the procedure, the surgeon will excise the excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The skin will then be repositioned and secured into place.

What is Blepharospasm?

Blepharospasm refers to spasms or irregular eyelid blinking.

Why Does Blepharospasm Happen?

Blepharospasm is thought to happen due to abnormal basal ganglion function. The basal ganglion, the portion of the brain that controls muscle movement, may be malfunctioning when a person has blepharospasm.

What Can Be Done For Blepharospasm?

Although there is no cure for blepharospasm, there may be several effective ways to manage the symptoms. While there are medications available for blepharospasm, they do not work effectively for all patients. For some patients, injections of Botox can help alleviate the symptoms of blepharospasm. Patients who opt for blepharoplasty may find that some of their abnormal muscle movement in the eye area is improved or even eliminated after surgery. While the main purpose of blepharoplasty is cosmetic, the improvement in blepharospasm symptoms could be a very significant (and excellent) side effect for some people.
