Cataracts Q&A

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye lens. Cataracts negatively impact vision, and they are quite common in older people. In fact, most people who are 80 or older have cataracts or have undergone surgery for cataracts in the past. Cataracts can happen in just one eye or in both eyes, but they don’t spread from one eye to the other eye.

What is Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery?

This type of surgery is a laser solution for cataracts. The laser technology used in this surgery, femtosecond technology, offers the highest levels of safety and accuracy to the procedure. The femtosecond laser can either replace hand-held surgical tools or help guide the use of these tools. The femtosecond laser is used in the corneal incision, in the anterior capsulotomy, and for fragmentation of the cataract.

What Are Multifocal Lenses?

Multifocal lenses are eyeglasses or contact lenses that have multiple prescriptions in one main lens. This allows the glasses wearer to see at all distances, from reading books close up to seeing signs in the distance. As a person ages, they tend to lose the ability to shift the focus of their eyes. This condition, known as presbyopia, can be corrected with multifocal lenses. Multifocals are designed to have a smooth transition between the different prescriptions. This is different than the old-fashioned bifocals, which had a clearly delineated line between the 2 prescriptions.

What Are Accommodating Lenses?

Accommodating lenses help the eyes adjust their focusing to allow for better vision at every distance. These lenses are often used after cataract surgery because they can help the eyes adjust to their new cataract-free state while providing improved vision.
